Dialogue with parliamentarians
Relations with AFD headquarters [+]
AFD’s management is regularly heard by the commissions of the French Senate and National Assembly, particularly by the Foreign Affairs commissions and the Finance commissions. At the European Parliament, this mainly concerns the Committee on Development.
In the framework of their activity, AFD’s officers often meet certain friendship groups that are associated with countries in its intervention area. They participate in symposiums organized during meetings. AFD may provide support for such symposiums. The officers answer the individual information requests made by parliamentarians and meet them to learn about their different work areas. Finally, AFD regularly receives parliamentarians at its headquarters to inform them about its activity.
Relations with the network of agencies [+]
Agencies both abroad and in the French Overseas Communities regularly receive parliamentarians. Special rapporteurs for the official development assistance (ODA) mission of the Finance Law conduct control missions which require an enormous amount of preparation. Other rapporteurs and fact-finding missions travel to the field. Moreover, delegations of friendship groups and parliamentarians travelling in a personal capacity sometimes wish to meet staff in the network agencies.
Optimizing the time allocated by parliamentarians [+]
The representatives of the Nation are increasingly specialized, particularly the rapporteurs, and AFD is required to respond to their various requests. The team dedicated to relations with parliamentarians aims to meet these requests and widen the circle of parliamentarians that wish to be better informed about AFD’s activities and analyses.
The role of parliamentarians vis-à-vis AFD [+]
Parliamentarians are influential political actors. They vote and control budgets dedicated to ODA. Moreover, two members of parliament, one senator and their alternate members now hold a seat on AFD’s Board of Directors.
How AFD provides an organized follow-up [+]
A “Parliamentary relations” officer is in charge of establishing contacts with parliamentarians and handles follow-up and capitalization. Please do not hesitate to contact him for any requests or suggestions.
